Milan’s Modern and Contemporary Art sale will take place on 27 and 28 May 2014.
To coincide with the retrospective exhibition in Paris, the sale features a tribute to Lucio Fontana which includes a refined selection of masterpieces coming from prestigious private collections. Several examples of slashes are featured: a double blue canvas dated 1959; a rare silver three slashes from 1962, of which only four examples are known; and an iconic single slash in white executed in 1965. A group of elegant ceramics, an early gesso dated 1934 and several sculptures complete the overview on the multiform activity of this artist.
Arte Povera is well represented by two important works by Alighiero Boetti from an Italian Private Collection. Lavoro Postale, a rare large-scale project of sent and returned envelopes from 1972, was conceived when Boetti was exhibiting at the MTL Gallery in Brussels, owned by artist and art critic Fernand Spillemaeckers, to whom all the envelopes were sent. A striking wooden sculpture by Mario Ceroli from 1967 from the New York Collection of Albert List, co-founder of the New Museum of Contemporary Art, completes the overview on this movement.
The vibrant art scene in Milan in the 60s is represented by Enrico Castellani’s superb selection of shaped canvases from 1959 to 1987; Agostino Bonalumi’s monochrome works; several paintings by Dadamaino and Turi Simeti; and a rare Nero by Paolo Scheggi executed in 1962.
